Besalú, Spain
medieval besalu
The town of Besalú is located at an important and traditional crossroads to the east of La Garrotxa. Bisuldunum, its original name, was a fortress between two rivers: the Fluvià, to the south, and the Capellades, to the north. The Miqvé or ritual bathhouse of Besalú is, along with that of Girona, the only Jewish bathhouse discovered until now in the Iberian Peninsula. It is a stone house with a barrel vault, typically Romanesque, from the 12th century.
The majestic Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià river is another of the vestiges of the County of Besalú, which, together with those of Barcelona, Ripoll and Girona, saw the birth of the Catalan nation. Besalú must be valued not only for the monuments, but also for the medieval atmosphere offered by its streets full of memories.
